Recently I received a $50 Visa Gift Card. After I made a few purchases, it had a balance of $4.61. The card sat on my desk for weeks. I could have written to the issuing bank requesting the $4.61 as a check. I could have used it in combination with my normal card to pay for a meal. (How long would that have taken to explain to the waiter?) Then, I got an idea. I had done work for a non-profit client of mine and remembered that their website accepted online donations. If this site let me specify the amount of my donation, I could use it to exhaust my card. It turned out to be a great solution to my dillema, and the birth of this website.

In doing research for this site, I was shocked to find that my $4.61 was about to become part of the $5 BILLION per year that goes unused on gift cards. If I could help people harness these tiny amounts for charities, quite a lot of good could be done.
